Scoops, Bowls, and Balls: Different Types of Ice Cream & How To Enjoy Them

By: My/Mochi Ice Cream

In 2020, a mouthboggling one billion gallons of ice cream was produced, and that number continues to rise. Fun fact, the average American eats 23 pounds of ice cream every year and we think that’s amazeballs!

How many ways can you enjoy it, let us count the ways! You can eat it in a cone, in a cup, in a bowl, with a spoon, on a stick, in a mochi ball, as a sandwich, as a bar, covered in chocolate, with sprinkles or with nuts, as a cake, as a pie, and you can even eat it rolled up!

Now that we’ve got your taste buds attention, what is ice cream and how many ways can you eat it? Read on to find out more about ice cream and how many different types of ice cream are out there!

Ice Cream

Ice Cream is cold, it’s creamy, and it comes in many forms. Ice cream is made with cream or butterfat, milk, sugar, and other flavorings. It must have 10% of milk fat to be considered ice cream. Ice cream can also be enjoyed as soft serve, which contains less milk fat than hard ice cream.

Mochi Ice Cream

Have you ever tried chewing your ice cream? With mochi ice cream, that’s the only way to do it! What is mochi ice cream? Here at My/Mochi, we love to answer that! Our team of master mochi makers take premium creamy ice cream snuggled inside pillowy rice dough for unprecedented puffnificence. Mochi ice cream does contain dairy AND there are also non-dairy, vegan options.

Gelato

Gelato, also known as Italian ice cream, is made using whole milk instead of cream. Gelato is churned at a lower speed than American ice cream and has a thicker, denser texture. While it doesn’t typically include eggs some gelato flavors do include eggs.

Frozen Yogurt

Frozen yogurt, or Fro-Yo, is made very similar to ice cream but contains a lower percentage of fat and of course, yogurt. Fro-yo can have a more tart flavor than ice cream and is smooth and creamy like soft-serve ice cream. Fro-yo is perfect for adding sweet, salty, fresh fruit, or even crunchy toppings.

Sorbet

Sorbet is often used as a palate cleanser, thanks to its flavor and lack of fat. Sorbet is fruit-based and made using sugar and fruit. While many think it is dairy free, some sorbet includes egg whites for texture and mixing. Because sorbet doesn’t typically include dairy, the texture is rougher and drier and is better enjoyed at room temperature.

Sherbet

While sherbet is fruit-based like sorbet, it also includes dairy. Sherbet is made using 1-3% milk fat combined with fruit juice, egg whites, and sometimes gelatin. Technically, sherbet would be considered ice cream if it contained more than 3% milk fat and water if it contained less than 1%.
